Joseph D. Babb, MD, MSCAI, FACC, FAHA

Joseph D. Babb, MD, MSCAI, FACC, FAHA, is a well-versed interventional cardiologist who diagnoses and treats patients at the East Carolina Heart Institute at ECU East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine in Greenville, North Carolina, where he also serves as Clinical Professor in the Division of Cardiology. Earlier in his career, he was Program Director for the Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowship and the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship, and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine. Interventional cardiology is a branch of cardiology that deals specifically with the catheter-based treatment of structural heart diseases. Dr. Babb has an impressive professional journey that spans forty-five years and his areas of expertise cover all facets of cardiology and interventional cardiology. Throughout his many years of experience, he has upheld a steadfast commitment to the ethical and professional standards of his practice, as evidenced by his sterling record, and ensures an impeccable degree of patient satisfaction in all facets of his work. Dr. Babb’s career began as Assistant Professor of Medicine and cardiologist at The Pennsylvania State University Hershey Medical Center, which he joined upon completing his fellowship training in 1972. While there, he attended a course in angioplasty given in Zurich, Switzerland, by Dr. Andreas Gruentzig, the father of coronary angioplasty. Upon his return, he performed the first coronary angioplasty at Hershey in 1981. Shortly thereafter he moved to Connecticut to become the Chief of Cardiology at The Bridgeport Hospital, where he performed the first coronary angioplasty in the state of Connecticut (1980-1995). In 1995, he moved to North Carolina to serve as Professor of Medicine and cardiologist at The East Carolina University School of Medicine. Joseph D. Babb, MD, MSCAI, FACC, FAHA, attended John Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, and was awarded his medical degree in 1966. His internship (1997) and internal medicine residency (1968) training followed and were conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Babb then entered the US Army for two years, the first serving in the medical corps in Vietnam and the second at Walter Reed Hospital (1968-1970). Dr. Babb is fellowship trained at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts (1970-1972). He received board certification in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease medicine, and interventional cardiology from the American Board of Internal Medicine and remains at the forefront of his challenging specialty via memberships and affiliations with prestigious professional societies and associations. Moreover, he attained Fellowship of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, Fellowship of the American College of Cardiology, and Fellowship in the Council for Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association. In addition to his medical degree, he holds a Bachelor degree in Pre-Medical Medicine acquired at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio (1961), as well as a one-year experimental embryology study at the University of Utrecht in Utrecht, Netherlands (1962), where he a Fulbright Fellowship was awarded allowing him to study with Dr. Pieter Niewkoop at the Hubrecht Institute. In 2005, he was honored with the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Babb is Past President and Fellow of the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions and was elected to Master of the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions in 2014.
